Dr. Tony Hernandez

Research Associate

Tony Hernandez received his BA (Hons.) in Geography from Staffordshire University. He was awarded an M.Sc. in GIS at Leicester University and a Ph.D in Retail Geography at the Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. His doctoral research focused on the impact of GIS within major retail organisations.

After his doctorate, he was employed as a Research Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University, working in the Locational Planning and Management Group within the Department of Retailing and Marketing. In addition to research, he taught courses to geography and retail management at the undergraduate and post-graduate level.

He is currently employed as a Research Associate within the Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity; and as an Assistant Professor within the School of Applied Geography, Ryerson University. He teaches geomarketing-based courses to geography and retail marketing students.

He has undertaken research within a large number of major retail organisations in Europe and North America, and has specialised in retail location decision making research. Dr Hernandez has presented and published numerous articles and papers on location decision making and analysis, including, for example, a large scale comparative international study of retail GIS development in Canada, the UK, and the Netherlands. His current research interests include business GIS, retail geography & location research, decision theory, location strategy, spatial modeling, data visualisation and decision support.
