Business Geomatics website launched. The aim of the site is to act as a portal for information for business practitioners and academics who are interested in the development of advanced visualization technologies. The web site was designed by Danielle Mirra - a graphic communications graduate from Ryerson. Tony Hernandez presents a paper on visual data mining to an audience of planners, retailers and government representatives. The presentation was part of the Smart Commerce II seminar organized by the Canadian Urban Institute. Ken Jones, Maurice Yeates and Tony Hernandez provide a Canadian perspective on Business Geomatics to the UK-based Academy of Marketing at their annual conference in Nottingham, UK. Work is underway on refining the CSCA's GIS modules developed for use with Iris Explorer Software. The team would welcome communication with other researchers who have tailored Iris Explorer for use with MapInfo and Arc-Info / Arc-View data formats. Business Geographics Conference Geovisualization
in Retail Decision Support This paper examines
the application of data visualization technology to spatial information.
The presentation explores the value of data visualization and data mining
procedures in two separate case studies. The first case will explore
the use of three-dimensional representation of time series data for
the Canadian retail system. This study will examine the use of the SARTRE
database of retail sales as a decision support tool for major retail
corporations. The second study examines the use of data visualization
to examine the operation of a network of retail locations. The focus
is on the weekly performance of individual outlets and the use of this
technology is providing strategic planning advice for such issues as
inventory planning, logistics support and marketing applications.
How the
Retail Landscape is Changing Established in 1992, the Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity (CSCA) is a leading authority on the distribution of retail and commercial activity across Canada. The Centre is a not-for-profit, membership based research centre, one of only two university research centres at Ryerson. CSCA has an established record providing its supporters - including retailers, developers, consultants, investors, and legislators with reliable, detailed information and analyses. Many of Canada's leading retail players turn to CSCA to enhance their strategic decision making, corporate restructuring and competitive positioning. Dr. Jones and his colleagues will profile CSCA's research areas and present an overview of the changing retail landscape in Canada, touching on areas of research such as data visualization, the Internet and CSCA's significant data bases. As well, Dr. Jones will outline CSCA's monthly research monographs and the Centre's various partnerships Webcast of Presentation

Geomatics in Canada: a marketing perspective Business Geomatics practitioner workshops and seminar are currently in the early planning stages. Information concerning future events will be posted here. Decision Support in Business Geomatics Dr. Tony Hernandez of the Centre for the Study in Commercial Activity (CSCA) has been funded with a Research Grant under the Initiative on the New Economy (INE) program of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada. Tony has been awarded a grant over three years for the project entitled "Decision Support in Business Geomatics". He will investigate how corporations will realize economic success in the new economy by realizing the potential offered by new technologies, seeking innovative solutions to business problems, and by developing and nurturing decision support environments that are centred on knowledge-creation and organizational learning. Perception-based Modeling and Business Geomatics Dr.
Ken Jones of
the Centre for Study of Commercial Activity has been funded from the
GEOIDE to undertake research into 'Perception-based Modeling and Business
Geomatics'. The three year grant is in collaboration with senior colleagues
at the University of Laval and a number of universities in the UK. The
project will address the following research topics: (1) Perception-based
spatial models for market estimation, for both the private (business/commercial)
and public sectors; (2) Demand side simulations for commercial nodes,
malls and property markets; (3) Spatio-temporal models (as calibrated
by geographically-based regression) for both residential and commercial
property valuation that will incorporate various aspects of spatial
cognition; (4) Hierarchical models of destination choice as applied
to private and public sector locations; and, (5) Composite and cognitive
mapping of decision making processes in business geomatics. Key results
from the research will be posted on this website.
